We all need a little pick-me-up from time to time. Whenever I’m feeling down, I pop in some earphones, turn the volume up and hit the play button. Music has this unique ability to inspire and empower us, so here’s a little suggestion – next time you’re feeling down, try these seven classic mood lifting songs that are ideal for any music connoisseurs playlist…
#1 Like a Prayer, Madonna
There’s something genuinely irresistible about gospel choirs. Madonna’s seminal classic ‘Like a Prayer’ mixes the joyous nature of gospel music with late 80s pop charm, and lyrics that speak to your soul. Every time I listen to this song I feel like I’m ready to face the world with renewed vigour!
#2 Famous Last Words, My Chemical Romance
An emo/rock song doesn’t seem like an obvious choice, but hear me out. Sometimes, there’s something so satisfying about thrashing everything out to the growling strains of a heavy guitar. ‘Famous Last Words’ is the song to put on when you need to let out a little anger to feel better.
#3 Sorry, Beyoncé
Queen Bey’s most recent album Lemonade presents us with the perfect break-up song in ‘Sorry’. Teaming haunting R&B beats with light synths and expletive-ridden lyrics, ‘Sorry’ serves as a massive screw you to all ex-partners everywhere. When she sings “Middle fingers up/I ain’t thinking ‘bout you”, you just have to think to yourself yeah, I deserve better, and that’s bound to lift your mood!
#4 The Sound, The 1975
This is a case of it doesn’t really matter what the lyrics are, the music’s so positively uplifting it’s bound to leave you in a good mood. One of the best tracks on Now 93, ‘The Sound’ with its jaunty synths, cool house piano strains and epic guitar solo make it an amazingly fun song to listen to.
#5 I’m Like a Bird, Nelly Furtado
Do you want to float away on a gentle sea breeze and forget all your troubles? A good song for this is Nelly Furtado’s debut single, ‘I’m Like a Bird’. Sprinkled with gentle beats and easy rhythms, this absolute classic feeds the wanderer within your soul, imploring you to ‘fly away’ from it all.
#6 Wake Me Up, Before You Go-Go, Wham
“Wake me up, before you go-go/ Don’t leave me hanging on like a yo-yo/Wake me up before you go-go/ I don’t want to miss it when you hit that high”. Need I say more. When those happy beats strike up and that iconic chorus starts, you just can’t help but get up and dance with a smile on your face! George Michael and Andrew Ridgley truly broke the mould when they came up with this one!
#7 Cheap Thrills, Sia ft. Sean Paul
One of the reasons I even bought Now 94 was because it had this song on it. This track is the kind of song you put on when you’re getting glammed up for a night out and you need to get the party started. When Sia sings “Baby I don’t need dollar bills to have fun tonight (I love cheap thrills!)” over a light synth-laden backing track, she’s sure to put you in the mood for the night of your life!
