Reviewing Bar 21 – The Jewel Of Manchester’s Northern Quarter

I partied a lot over the Christmas season, celebrating the holidays with my loved ones in various cities across the UK. While I was visiting my friend Maria in Manchester, we went to Bar 21 in the city’s artsy Northern Quarter and I would absolutely recommend that you check it out. Here’s why…

Getting there

Bar 21 is located on St Thomas Street, in the heart of the Northern Quarter. You’ll be happy to learn that its really easy to find – if you’re lost just head to Manchester’s iconic Printworks, which are nearby and go from there. You can get into Bar 21without paying a single penny, making it a very cost effective Manchester hotspot and once you get there, you’re sure to have a whale of a time.

In the movies

The minute you enter Bar 21, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto the silver screen, as its a movie-themed venue. The side of its bar is particularly impressive, as it features a printed movie-reel showcasing still from flicks like Harry Potter, Sin City and Kill Bill. Other cool movie-themed decorations include Harry Potter-inspired tables, dressing room-esque doors – complete with the traditional gold star and a massive full-wall picture of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Delicious drinks

At that bar, you can also buy some delicious drinks. Bar 21 sells all the usual fare including lager, wine and spirits, as well as niche products, such as Staropramen, an incredibly strong Czech lager. Furthermore, it provides various popular cocktails such as Manhattans and Cosmopolitans, as well as unique house specials for you to sample. I’d recommend that you try the ‘Signature 21,’ a mix of liquor 43, tuca and courvoisier with an orange twist, which costs £9. This is hefty but the Signature 21 is worth the money and on the whole, Bar 21’s drinks prices are reasonable for Manchester!

Other worlds

Bar 21 is a bit like Viaduct, a gay bar in Leeds, in that you can find different experiences, depending on where you are within the venue. In Bar 21’s case, on the opposite side of the room from the entrance, you’ll find a secret tunnel which leads you down into another room, allowing you to enter a whole other world. Darker than the room above, it features quirky yet stylish décor, a small bar and a room-wide dance floor where you can get down with your mates while partying in Manchester!

Cracking tunes

If you’re an indie fan this second room, appropriately called ‘Club 21,’ will be your idea of heaven. On any given night, you can bop away to songs from the likes of The Killers, The Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, and more. Club 21 also regularly hosts some of the hottest DJs in Manchester, who play everything from indie, pop and cheese, to motown, soul and disco. With Bar 21 staying open late, even to 3am on weekends, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy all these amazing tunes!

Everything you need

If you go to Bar 21, when next visiting the Northern Quarter, you’ll have everything you need for a memorable night out. You can start by sipping cocktails upstairs, while admiring Bar 21’s dedication to cinematic history, before walking down into Club 21, to dance the night away! You won’t have to bother going to the effort of bar hopping, which can be annoying when you just want to have fun!
